Tips for texting with customers and prospects

It’s no secret that texting is now a staple in communication. In fact, nearly three-quarters of all Americans use it on a regular basis. And because so many people text, you need to know how to do it right – and fast! Here are some simple tips for using your phone as an effective business tool:

1. Keep your messages brief and to the point.

People are busy and they don’t have time to read long-drawn-out messages. When you text someone, make sure your messages are concise and to the point.

6. Respond promptly.

When someone texts you, make sure to respond as quickly as possible. The longer you wait to respond, the more likely it is that you’ll lose the conversation.

7. Make sure your phone is charged and has a signal.

This may seem like an obvious tip, but it’s important to make sure your phone is always charged and ready to receive texts. If you’re in the middle of a conversation with someone and your battery dies or you lose reception, that person will most likely think they’ve been ignored.

8. Keep personal conversations personal.

I know, I know… this one is tough. But when you’re texting someone about personal matters, make sure to keep the conversation between the two of you. For example, if you’re asking your friend for restaurant recommendations, keep the conversation focused on restaurants. Don’t start asking them about their love life or what they did over the weekend.

9. Use emoticons sparingly.

Using emoticons can help you convey your emotions and add a bit of variety to your messages. However, using them too much can make you seem unprofessional and like someone who doesn’t know the rules of English grammar.

10. Don’t use SMS lingo unless you know the person well enough or it is necessary for your message.

SMS lingo, or text speak, is a great way to save time and space in your messages, but you should only use it when you know the person well enough to understand what you’re saying. For example, “wut up” may be perfectly acceptable to use when texting your best friend, but it’s not appropriate when texting a potential client.
